Budweiser: Belgium for beer

I’ve probably drunk less than half-a-case of Budweiser in my life. I know, I know that’s very un-American of me and very, very un-Midwestern American of me. But Budweiser has brought me great joy, all the same. (And NO, Annie did not fall for me after a night of heavy Bud drinking either.)

I’ve enjoyed Budweiser’s ads, especially the Real Men of Courage ads – brilliant.

And I always enjoy being in a foreign country and seeing Budweiser listed under the imports. Do foreigners actually pay more money to drink American beer than their local flavor, which probably tastes better (and less filling), anyhow? Why? Does it help them capture some of the rugged, do-it-yourself boot-strap-pullin’ up, raw Americanism?

Alas, those days are gone. Now Budweiser is a Belgium beer. Even though it will probably start tastin’ greater and be less filling, I’m sad to see Budweiser go the way of so many other victims of American inflation.

   Budweiser ads are always the best. I do agree that “Real Men of Genius” are really good, but let’s not forget “Frank and Louie” (tree lizards) and their ads were even funnier when the ferret was in them. Remember those?

   I’ve never met a funny Belgian. I’m afraid the commercials could suffer.

   I know belgium commercials are terrible.

   But we make great beer

   Freek, I have no doubt your beer is better. I was not aware that Belgium commercials were terrible. I was just pointing out that the American Budweiser commercials were that good.

   I hope that the Belgian brewer understands that the history of a beer is maybe more important than his taste. I’m totaly against the idea that one company should own all the breweries of the whole world. At the end we all drink the same beer.
   Concerning the quality of the commercials I believe that they will be as creative as in other countries.

   I’m from Belgium myself.

   Rik, I drank an old can of (pre-Belgium buyout) Bud the other day and I can honestly say that I care less about the preservation of Bud’s taste than the preservation of the quality of their ads.

   Do Belgians actually drink Budweiser?

   Thanks for the link to that video. Funny stuff. I’m thinking that Bud isn’t going to be able to play up the Americana angle as much as they’ve done in the past.
